UGM International Collaboration Data Gathering for SDG

The University has undertaken a number of international collaborations to support the SDGs fully. Some of them are through research collaborations in various fields such as social, economics, fisheries, and biodiversity.

The University, through the Faculty of Economics and Business UGM, launched the ANGEL Hub at the BSI FEB UGM Entrepreneurship Academy, focusing on green technology and sustainable development. The ASEAN Network for Green Entrepreneurship and Leadership (ANGEL) aims to promote green business practices within ASEAN, empowering individuals, communities, and businesses to drive the green economy.

ANGEL Hub offers research services for students, faculty, and external partners, supporting assignments and research related to the green economy and sustainability. It collaborates with various partners, providing equipment and resources for dissemination, content creation, and other needs, and is connected to the FEB UGM Learning and Academic Production (LAMP) Studio. This collaboration enables the hub to gather and measure data critical for achieving SDGs, bridging academic and industrial research needs, and fostering international cooperation to advance sustainability goals.

From a social perspective, UGM organised the 2023 Annual Convention on the Global South (GO-SOUTH) with the theme ‘Decentering Indo-Pacific: Global South in a Changing World’, which discussed the dynamics of the Indo-Pacific through a geopolitical lens. The outcome of the convention was a database project called ‘Damai Pangkal Damai (DPD)’ as a database project and an anti-violence campaign initiated by the Institute of International Studies. The DPD campaign focuses on disseminating information and analyses on non-violent conflict resolution methods, as introduced by Gene Sharp in 1973.

In terms of fisheries, Universitas Gadjah Mada is collaborating with the Korea-Indonesia Marine Technology Cooperation Research Centre. Both agreed to explore in the fields of Remote Sensing, Coastal Management, Blue Carbon, and Marine Science and Fisheries. Field measurement data processing sessions were conducted at the Korea-Indonesia MTCRC Cirebon Centre guided by trainers starting from the conceptual and framework in data processing, system description, introduction to measurement data formats, data processing software used, and technical data processing methods and techniques described through tutorials and the use of modules for  MBES, SBP, ADCP, and CTD data processing.

In terms of biodiversity, the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) and the Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) signed a five-year MoU to strengthen ties, drive meaningful progress in the palm oil industry and inspire the next generation of sustainability advocates. The MoU will see cooperation between the UGM and RSPO in the areas of research and education, with support extended for youth engagement activities to achieve a sustainable palm oil sector in Indonesia.

UGM’s Faculty of Biology annually hosts the Annual International Summer Course on Tropical Biodiversity and Sustainable Development. This course addresses the challenges faced by tropical ecosystems, including deforestation and climate change, and promotes sustainable practices. The program includes lectures, fieldwork, and community engagement, emphasising the conservation of wild flora and fauna with global participants. In the 6th year of the International Summer Course on Tropical Biodiversity, the first lecture series was “One Health and Sustainable Development in the Anthropocene and Climate Change.” It tackles the issue of challenges at the intersection of human, animal, and environmental health.

UGM also hosted the International Symposium on Wildlife Biodiversity Conservation, focusing on protecting wildlife at various ecological levels. The symposium facilitated discussions and collaborations to tackle the multifaceted challenges of wildlife conservation. The key partners for this event are the University of Aberdeen, the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation, and the Indonesian Ministry of Environment and Forestry.
