UGM’s International Symposium on Wildlife Biodiversity Conservation: A Call to Action

Universitas Gadjah Mada actively promotes the conservation and sustainable use of land, including forests and wildlands, through various events and initiatives.

These events include symposiums and seminars, such as the “International Symposium on Wildlife Biodiversity Conservation: Planet, People, and Biodiversity Towards a Prosperous Future of Humanity” which was held from September 4th to 6th, 2023. The ISWBC symposium addressed the urgent need for concerted action to protect wildlife at the ecosystem, species, and population levels, fostering discussions and collaborations on wildlife conservation challenges.

Meanwhile, the Faculty of Biology held the 8th National Seminar on Tropical Biology on July 20, 2024, with the theme “Biosecurity Innovation and Tropical Biodiversity Conservation.” The seminar provided a platform for academics, researchers, and practitioners to discuss innovative solutions for biosecurity and biodiversity conservation in tropical regions.

Other events on sustainable use of land include festivals. Each year, the Department of Communication organises the Ajisaka UGM Festival, a national communication competition. The 2024 festival, themed “Nature Conservation” with the tagline “Samarthya Bhumi,” encourages youth to contribute innovative ideas related to environmental conservation.

UGM further supports the sustainable use of land through community service programs. One of UGM’s community service units planted mangroves in Bakau Serip Village, Batam City, Riau Islands. Planting mangroves is hoped to restore coastal ecosystems, mitigate climate change, and serve as a model for environmental preservation efforts.

Through these events and programs, UGM demonstrates its commitment to promoting conservation and the sustainable use of land, forests, and wildlands, engaging both the academic community and the public in environmental stewardship.
