Collaboration with NGOs for SDGs

UGM conducts a number of collaborations with NGOs to support SDGs through student volunteering, research programmes, and educational resource development. Through student volunteering programmes, UGM involved students in the ‘Kinarya Cinta untuk Bumi Dieng’ event which held a poster exhibition and summarised the work and products of MSMEs fostered by KKN students. This collaboration was held on the Dataran Tinggi Dieng, or The Dieng Plateau, one of the famous geothermal energy sources in Indonesia, becoming a renewable source of electricity as well as a tourist destination that can provide economic benefits to the surrounding community. This collaboration between MSMEs is part of the campus’ dedication to SDGs point 8, namely Decent Work and Economic Growth.

Through research programmes, Universitas Gadjah Mada seeks to solve problems through collaboration at the local level. Waste is a common problem in Yogyakarta City. The waste problem is trying to be reduced through research products from the Organic Waste Management Task Force of Faculty of Biology UGM. UGM offers the use of Bioferti 2023 to shorten the process of processing organic waste in the People’s Market. This collaboration contributes to SDG 7, Affordable and Clean Energy and SDG 12, Responsible Consumption and Production.

UGM also supports SDGs 13, Climate Action and SDGs 15, Life on Land due to local conservation. UGM collaborates with Yayasan Konservasi Alam Nusantara (YKAN) and North Kalimantan Provincial Government to actively preserve and promote Mount Batu Benau as a geological heritage. The preservation of Mount Batu Benau is in line with the preservation of culture and biodiversity. In this multi-stakeholder initiative, UGM plays an important role in the identification and mapping of 11 points of geological diversity that are promoted as geological heritage. This collaboration has captured the opportunity to optimise geoparks as geological heritage and ecotourism aligned with conservation activities that balance economic and ecological goals.

Universitas Gadjah Mada innovates internationally through research collaboration with Oxford Nanopore Technologies and Yayasan Satriabudi Dharma Setia (YSDS) . The result of this research is Whole-Genome Sequencing (WGS), a living genome sequencing technology that has currently helped many biological researches, both in identifying genetic variations and biodiversity as well as identifying diseases and disorders experienced by humans, animals, and plants. This collaboration contributes to SDGs 3, Good Health and Wellbeing.

In developing educational resources, UGM has successfully contributed to SDGs 11, Sustainable Cities and Communities through a number of collaborations with NGOs. First, collaboration with the Institute for Research and Empowerment and Salam Bantul Academy launched the KIBAR UGM Programme (Learning and Empowerment Community of Universitas Gadjah Mada). This collaboration is also supported by local government, village government, UGM academic community, media and community as a forum for community empowerment on the banks of the Code river, Sleman regency, Yogyakarta. The programme uses spatial, social, and sectoral databases as the basis for empowerment programme planning. The data is collected, processed, and utilised in a participatory and dynamic manner between the campus, local government, and community so that it can be a reference for sustainable development programme planning.

This collaboration conducted by UGM also contributes to the implementation of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education. On another occasion, the Consultation and Legal Aid Centre of the Faculty of Law Universitas Gadjah Mada (PKBH FH UGM) collaborated with Desamind. Desamind is an NGO that encourages village development with global competence and grassroots understanding.
