Many students struggle with food insecurity, which can take a toll on both their academic performance and well-being. To help with this, UGM has set up a monthly breakfast program, along with a special breakfast initiative during final exams, giving students access to nutritious meals when they need it most.
Monthly Routine Program
Healthy Breakfast from Faculty of Medicine, Public Health, and Nursing
The first program, the monthly breakfast initiative, called Angkringan 8888, is organized by the Faculty of Medicine, Public Health, and Nursing as part of the Health Promoting University (HPU) initiative. This program provides free, nutritious breakfast options at three designated locations within the faculty. The breakfast menu includes a variety of healthy items, such as chicken or tuna rice balls, quail egg satay, and fresh fruit juices, all aimed at encouraging students to develop healthier eating habits. This initiative not only promotes the importance of a balanced diet but also supports local entrepreneurs by sourcing meals from students and alumni, thereby contributing to the development of small businesses within the university community.
Breakfast Programs During Final Exams
UGM has established multiple programs to support students’ health and nutrition during the semester exam periods. These programs alleviate stress associated with exams by ensuring that students have access to nutritious meals.
SAPA PAGI (Faculty of Biology): Launched in 2022, this program offers free breakfasts to students during exam periods, providing around 200 portions daily. The initiative helps students concentrate on their studies without worrying about meal preparation.
Pondasi (Faculty of Agriculture): This program distributed 10,000 free breakfast portions from December 4 to 19, 2023, enabling students to focus on their studies during the exam period.
Fisipol Free Breakfast (Faculty of Social and Political Sciences): Operating since 2017, this program offers free breakfasts during Midterm and Final Semester Exams, providing 100 to 200 portions daily. This initiative promotes health and well-being, ensuring that students receive adequate nutrition during critical academic periods.
