Universitas Gadjah Mada proudly declares that the number of men and women applications in their fields is equal and evenly spread. Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) promotes gender equality across all academic disciplines. While the university does not publicly disclose detailed enrollment statistics by gender for each program, it is generally observed that certain fields tend to have lower female representation, which is similar to global trends. The underrepresented subjects in UGM, as shown in the figure below, include the Engineering and Technology Cluster, with disciplines such as Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Computer Science typically seeing fewer female students. All the clusters and subjects in UGM are already above the minimum share of seats in Parliament in Indonesia, which we use as the base for being considered an underrepresented subject. However, a significant disparity can be seen among some clusters, such as comparing the Engineering cluster with the Health and Medical Sciences Cluster.
To address these disparities, UGM has implemented various initiatives aimed at encouraging women’s participation in these areas:
Scholarship Programs
UGM offers scholarships targeting female students pursuing studies in underrepresented fields, aiming to reduce financial barriers and promote diversity.
Mentorship and Support Networks
The university provides mentorship programs and support networks to assist female students in navigating their academic and professional journeys within these disciplines.
Outreach and Engagement
UGM collaborates with community groups, government agencies, and NGOs to promote STEM education among young women, inspiring them to pursue careers in these fields. Southeast Asian Women Mathematicians Meeting 2023 (SEAWM2 2023).
Through these efforts, UGM strives to create an inclusive academic environment that supports and encourages women’s participation across all subjects.
