Tracking Gender Diversity in Higher Education: Insights from UGM

UGM has established systematic measures of application, acceptance, entry, and graduation rates. The admitted and graduate applicants are required to declare their gender identity in UGM’s database systems for application, current student, and graduation. For the applicant rate, the gender tracking system will be tracked from the Entrance Examination system (https://um.ugm.ac.id/pendaftaran/public/akun/registrasi).

In addition to that, relevant units (i.e., the University Quality Assurance and Reputation Unit) that must monitor the diversity of the university community, including ensuring that women are represented equally, have access to monitor the diversity metrics. UGM now has a Data Mart application that enables easy monitoring of the metrics.

Data Mart application can track student gender

Using this database for analysis, UGM has improved the female acceptance rate. In 2024,the new female students were 6346 while the new male students were 4332.

Impressive achievements in the improved gender equality are also evident in the graduation rate. On average, the female graduation rate since 2023 in Universitas Gadjah Mada has been 54% and has continuously exceeded the male graduation rate.
