UGM is part of the Health Promoting University (HPU) network, which has been developed since 2014 through the Health Promoting Network of the ASEAN University Network (AUN-HPN). As one of approximately 30 Southeast Asian universities in AUN, UGM contributed to drafting the Healthy University Framework. The framework, which was finalised in 2017, serves as a guideline for implementing healthy campus initiatives across AUN member universities. The framework states that universities in the HPU must have sports facilities since engaging in sports or physical activities is one way to maintain a healthy and fit body.
Jogging tracks are an easy yet essential health infrastructure on campus, promoting physical activity and overall well-being. At UGM, several jogging tracks are accessible for free to students, the academic community, administrative staff, and the public. They provide a safe and convenient space for exercise, encouraging students, staff, and the community to stay active, reduce stress, and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
One popular track is located in Wisdom Park, as shown below. Wisdom Park is located on the east side of UGM’s Main Campus. It is one of UGM’s and Yogyakarta’s green open space areas (see Wisdom Park An Urban Park in Yogyakarta) which also boasts indoor and outdoor sports facilities, a jogging track, and various recreational facilities that can be used by the campus community and the public to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Due to the variety of facilities provided within Wisdom Park, from sports to recreational activities, many websites recommend this unique urban campus park. It is an ideal space for hosting events, and a variety of areas are offered to the public that can be tailored to suit the type of activity.
Another large outdoor sports activity area is in the Grha Sabha Pramana (GSP) area, UGM’s main multipurpose building. During the daytime, the area is part of the public service area for people visiting the GSP building where events occasionally take place, such as commencement, conferences, wedding receptions, etc. The outdoor area also connects the GSP Building to the Library and the UGM’s Main Administration Office (Gedung Pusat UGM). In the evenings and on holidays, this area is open to the public to use for exercising and recreational activities such as jogging.
Embung PIAT is one of the many water reservoirs located within UGM’s Agrotechnology Innovation Center (PIAT), which features expansive open spaces and serves as a popular gathering spot for locals and their families. To maintain a conducive area, the entrance gate is blocked to prevent motor vehicles from entering. Visitors are able to enjoy physical activities like jogging around the reservoir, while children can have fun at the dedicated playground.
