UGM’s Strategic Initiatives in Combating Marine Pollution and Promoting Sustainable Tourism Development

Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) is proactively engaged in a multitude of initiatives aimed at mitigating marine pollution, particularly from terrestrial sources. In collaboration with local government authorities, UGM has developed a comprehensive tourism master plan. This plan incorporates strategies for infrastructure development and promotion, explicitly designed to minimise environmental impacts. This initiative aligns with the Sustainable Development UGM objective of ensuring equal access to basic services for all, thereby underscoring the critical importance of strategic policy-making that prioritises both sustainability and inclusiveness. This partnership also plays a pivotal role in formulating local regulations, especially for the Kediri Regency Regional Poverty Alleviation Plan for 2021-2026.

Furthermore, the UGM Centre for ASEAN Studies has conducted an in-depth analysis of Indonesia’s initiatives to reduce marine litter by 70% by 2025. This analysis highlights Indonesia’s substantial contribution to global plastic pollution and underscores the urgent necessity for effective waste management strategies. Through these efforts, UGM exemplifies its dedication to combating marine pollution through rigorous research, policy development, and active community engagement.
