Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) is dedicated to minimizing physical, chemical, and biological alterations of aquatic ecosystems through comprehensive environmental management and monitoring plans. These plans include regular assessments and evaluations to ensure that campus operations are conducted in an environmentally sustainable manner, thereby protecting associated aquatic ecosystems, wildlife, and human health.
The Department of Fisheries at UGM, established in 1963/1964 and formalized in 1983, plays a key role in managing aquatic ecosystems through research and innovation. Its focus areas include aquaculture, resource management, and fisheries product development, supported by cutting-edge laboratories.
Key initiatives include developing sustainable aquaculture systems, such as superior tilapia strains and disease-resistant fish species, alongside ecosystem-based management of habitats like mangroves and coral reefs. The Laboratory of Aquatic Ecology addresses water quality and pollution, while the Laboratory of Fishery Resources Management focuses on inventorying fishery resources and conservation. Eco-friendly fishing tools are designed by the Laboratory of Equipment and Fishing Methods to reduce environmental impact.
Socio-economic integration is achieved through the Laboratory of Fishery Socio-Economy Study, which empowers coastal communities and develops sustainable fisheries policies. Collaboration with global institutions strengthens the department’s capacity to mitigate environmental challenges and enhance biodiversity.
This integrated framework highlights UGM’s commitment to sustainable fisheries and ecosystem resilience.
