UGM Inform and Support Government

Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) has established a collaborative partnership with the Makassar City Government to advance the development of low-carbon urban areas and reduce carbon emissions. This alliance is exemplified by the Net Zero Carbon Communities (NZCC) program, which focuses on implementing renewable energy solutions and promoting sustainable practices within the community.

Key Initiatives and Collaborations:

  • Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)
On May 14, 2024, UGM and the Makassar City Government signed an MoU to develop low-carbon city initiatives jointly. The agreement underscores a shared commitment to environmental sustainability and the reduction of carbon footprints.
  • Net Zero Carbon Communities (NZCC) Program
UGM’s Center for Energy Studies (Pusat Studi Energi) collaborates with institutions such as the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), Pennsylvania State University, and the University of Colorado Boulder, alongside the Makassar City Government, in the NZCC program. Funded by the U.S. Department of State, the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), and the Makassar City Government, this program aims to increase the utilisation of renewable energy in Makassar. It includes the installation of solar panels in three locations: Tanjung Merdeka, Bira, and Buntusu.
  • International Collaboration
UGM has formed a consortium with international partners to implement renewable energy and energy monitoring technologies, aiming to build a net-zero carbon community in Makassar. This initiative demonstrates that sustainable development and community welfare enhancement can continue, inspiring other development teams to pursue similar goals.

Through these collaborative efforts, UGM provides expertise and support to local authorities, enhancing their capacity to monitor environmental changes and respond proactively to climate-related challenges. By integrating academic research with practical applications, UGM contributes to the development of resilient communities capable of mitigating and adapting to the impacts of climate change. The partnership with the Makassar City Government serves as a model for other regions aiming to achieve sustainability and resilience in the face of environmental challenges. These initiatives are aligned with SDG 7 (see more here, with the article titled Collaborative Efforts Toward Low-Carbon Cities and Clean Energy in Indonesia).
