Empowering Industries Through Energy Efficiency and Renewable Solutions

Universitas Gadjah Mada drives energy efficiency and clean energy development by providing direct services to local industries, including energy efficiency assessments, workshops, and renewable energy research. Through these initiatives, UGM fosters cleaner energy practices and helps industries transition toward a more sustainable future.

In 2022, UGM handed over the first of seven planned Gadjah Mada Electric Airport Transporter (GATe) units to Angkasa Pura I, a state-owned corporation responsible for airport management in central and eastern Indonesia. Angkasa Pura I is the management company of Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA). The GATe unit, a 25 km/h electric airport vehicle that can carry up to 6 people in one go, is one of seven units that will operate at YIA. There are also three units that operate at Soekarno-Hatta Airport, in Borobudur Temple, and within the main campus. GATe is the first step in UGM’s plan to support passengers and airport operations across Indonesia through incorporating renewable energy solutions and sustainable practices within the industry. In 2023, GATe officially entered the national e-catalogue system, which enables consumers to purchase and procure this vehicle.

Other UGM initiatives to enhance energy efficiency within industrial sectors are energy efficiency assessments, research and development in renewable energy options, and workshops or training programs. UGM’s Center for Energy Studies offers energy audit services to industries to help identify opportunities to reduce energy consumption and improve operational efficiency. These assessments provide tailored recommendations for implementing energy-saving measures.

The Center of Energy Studies also offers the Certified Energy Manager (CEM) Training program in collaboration with PT TUV Nord Indonesia (PSE CEM Training Program). This five-day course equips participants with comprehensive knowledge of energy management, covering topics such as energy auditing, efficiency strategies, and the implementation of energy management systems. The program is designed for students and alumni specialising in energy conversion, preparing them for roles as energy managers in various industries.

UGM also has the Renewable Energy Laboratory at the Faculty of Engineering specialises in the development of new and renewable energy systems and energy conservation systems. The laboratory not only facilitates learning activities and reach, it also provides services for industry, including energy conservation studies in industry and in buildings, and safety studies of industrial systems.
