UGM Divestment Policy

UGM is committed to divesting from carbon-intensive energy industries in order to promote sustainable lifestyle on campus. This is iterated in Circular Letter Number 16839/UN1.P/HK.02/2024  on Sustainable Lifestyle. Point 6 (b) states that UGM will implement policies that promote sustainability, which includes avoiding financial involvement with companies operating in industries with high carbon emissions (refer to pg. 4).

This regulation is a follow-up to Circular Letter Number 1797/UN1.P/KJM/BU/2020  on Sustainable Lifestyle.

UGM’s commitment to divest from carbon-intensive energy industries is realized in the university’s Strategic Plan 2022-2027. Each year, UGM has a set target to reduce the number of carbon emitting vehicles on campus. Transportation guidelines aimed at reducing carbon emissions and promoting environmentally friendly commuting options are further regulated in Rector’s Decree Number 911/UNLP/SK/HUKOR/2018, such as by increasing the use of Zero-Emission Vehicles and green transportation.

UGM’s commitment to divesting from industries with high carbon emissions is also reflected in the university’s procurement process of both goods and services that prioritise sustainability aspects. UGM chooses products made by local producers using environmentally friendly materials and preserving natural resources.

Another notable initiative is the installation of renewable energy systems in UGM buildings, guided by the Technical Guidance on Building Planning, Maintenance, and Conservation and Rector’s Regulation Number 2 Year 2022.
