Universitas Gadjah Mada: Championing Inclusivity and Equality

At Universitas Gadjah Mada, inclusivity is more than a principle, it is a promise. Rooted in the university’s mission to foster social justice, UGM strives to create a community where inclusivity and diversity thrive and every individual is valued. Guided by the Board of Trustees Regulation Number 1 Year 2023, UGM’s Strategic Plan 2022-2027 underscores an unwavering commitment to equality. Here (pg. 14) UGM clearly advocates for equality for all by eliminating discrimination based on race, ethnicity, gender, marital status, disability, age, religion, social background, political affiliation, underrepresented minorities, or vulnerable groups to achieve social justice.

Through university policies, such as the Board of Trustees Regulation Number 1 Year 2023, UGM can safeguard a campus where diversity thrives and equal opportunities are upheld. These policies aim to eliminate discrimination in all its forms —free from sexual violence, other forms of violence, bullying, mental health challenges, and discrimination—while embracing and supporting individuals with disabilities.

UGM’s pledge to erase all forms of discrimination is reiterated and developed yearly. See the Board of Trustees Regulation Number 1 Year 2021, which states that the development of UGM as an inclusive campus necessitates the creation of an equally inclusive campus atmosphere. An inclusive atmosphere supports the spirit of anti-discrimination, and this inclusive atmosphere can be realised not only through policies that promote inclusivity but also through sensitivity to inclusive values, the development of inclusive infrastructure, and other related measures.

See also the Board of Trustees Regulation Number 1 Year 2020 (pg. 2), which affirmed the Universitas Gadjah Mada Strategic Plan for 2017-2022 that was used as a guideline for every work unit within Universitas Gadjah Mada for the 2017-2022 period.

Fighting sexual violence is an essential aspect of promoting equality and combating discrimination. By addressing this issue, institutions can foster a safe and inclusive environment where every individual is respected and valued. At UGM, the university is committed to upholding the values of humanity and dignity while ensuring the protection of all members of its community from any form of sexual violence. This dedication is firmly established in Rector’s Regulation Number 1 Year 2020 (Article 2) and reinforced through the updated Rector’s Regulation Number 1 Year 2023 (Article 2).
