Improving Access to Basic Services: Health Screenings, Nutrition Counseling, and Zero Waste Initiatives in Indonesia

Health Check-ups

Health assessment program and educational project

In an initiative to boost public health, UGM has launched a variety of health screening programs and educational projects. The UGM Dental Hygiene Program conducted a Dental health check-up and counselling session for elderly residents in Sidorejo. Another event took place in March 2023, where UGM facilitated Health assessments and emergency care training for elderly residents near its Yogyakarta campus. This program, which engaged 75 elderly participants along with their caregivers, sought to enhance the bonds between UGM and local neighbourhoods, especially in Caturtunggal and Sinduadi. Backed by the Directorate of Community Service, the Faculty of Pharmacy, and the university’s hospital, this effort demonstrates UGM’s dedication to empowering local communities through social initiatives.

Advances in diagnostic technologies for tuberculosis

UGM students conducted health screenings in Kapanewon Wates, focusing on chronic conditions like hypertension and diabetes, guided by healthcare professionals from Puskesmas Wates. These efforts raised awareness about the importance of regular health evaluations while fostering community involvement. Additionally, students were assisted with cognitive health screenings in Padukuhan VI Dowangan. In collaboration with UGM’s Faculty of Medicine, the Zero TB Yogyakarta initiative has also been actively screening for tuberculosis and employing advanced diagnostic technologies in high-risk areas. These comprehensive strategies provide essential health services and enhance community well-being.

Nutrition Counseling

UGM is leading efforts to improve nutrition among at-risk groups, particularly children. On April 18-19, 2023, the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine executed a program aimed at combating stunting by distributing Omega eggs and providing educational workshops on their health advantages. This initiative was directed at local communities, reinforcing UGM’s commitment to enhancing child nutrition.

On July 17, 2023, the UGM Student Community Service – Community Empowerment Learning (KKN-PPM UGM) team organised an important event centred on the health rights of mothers and children and the safe consumption of meat. This program featured demonstrations on preparing healthy meals and empowering mothers with crucial nutrition and child care knowledge. These educational initiatives are designed to heighten awareness of the significance of providing balanced, high-quality nutrition for children, which is essential for their growth and development.

Healthy Lifestyle and Zero Waste Counseling

Eco-enzyme and Microgreens Training for the Moyudan Sleman Community

The community service team from UGM’s Faculty of Biology has been actively promoting sustainable practices through outreach activities. On May 13, 2023, they engaged local residents in Kedung Banteng, Sumberagung, advocating for Eco-Enzyme use in cleaning and personal hygiene to reduce chemical waste. They also highlighted the importance of growing microgreens for vital nutrients, particularly for infants and young children, to combat stunting and wasting.

Another initiative focused on managing banana processing waste, teaching community members how to utilise banana peels and leftover cooking oil effectively. These efforts emphasise waste reduction and resource optimisation, fostering a zero-waste food processing philosophy. The UGM Center for Agrotechnology Innovation also celebrated National Waste Care Day with a workshop on organic waste management to promote practices that help reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
