Faculty of Social and Political Sciences Launched “Piawai Kuliah Daring” Book

Faculty of Social and Political Sciences UGM launched a book entitled “Piawai Kuliah Daring”. This book launching was a response toward the Covid-19 pandemic, which causes remote lectures since early March.

Dr. Randy Wirasta Nandyatama, M.Sc., as the coordinator of the Academic Innovation Unit at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences UGM, explained that at the end of the semester, the Academic Innovation Unit as the coordinating unit of remote learning conducted an evaluation survey related to its implementation in the semester that had been running. The survey was conducted by collecting opinion data from tens of lecturers and hundreds of students.

“The results of the evaluation survey show that the implementation of online lectures is faced with problems such as the unequal availability of supporting infrastructure, lack of human resource capacity, and monotonous use of methods and media, causing boredom for students,” he said on Tuesday (4/8) at the launching.

Following the evaluation results and considering the plan to implement online lectures in the following semester, the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences UGM sees the need for a guideline to guide lecturers and students in implementing online lectures. Therefore, the pocketbook entitled “Piawai Kuliah Daring” is expected to guide academicians in conducting online lectures.

“This pocketbook contains the design of the implementation of distance learning, various media and learning methods, and assistance with infrastructure,” said Randy.

The book launching, held through a zoom and live streaming application, presented several university and faculty leaders. Some of them were UGM Rector, Prof. Ir. Panut Mulyono, M.Eng., D.Eng., IPU, ASEAN Eng., Dean of Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Prof. Dr. Erwan Agus Purwanto, M. Si, Dean of FEB, Eko Suwardi, M.Sc., Ph.D., Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy, Prof. Agung Endro Nugroho, M.Si., Ph.D., Apt, Dean of the Faculty of Geography, Prof. Dr.rer.nat. Muh. Aris Marfa’i., M, Sc, Dean of the Faculty of Biology, Prof. Dr. Budi Setiadi Daryono, M.Agr., Sc and others.

Erwan Agus, as the Dean of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, welcomed this pocketbook’s launch. This book will benefit lecturers and students in the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences UGM.

“Thankfully, it can be useful for other faculties, with various modifications. This book is a result from last semester’s sudden online learning evaluation, which then developed with multiple variations,” said Erwan.

Erwan revealed that the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences UGM is planning to improve the next semester’s lectures. Amid the Covid-19 pandemic, lectures in the odd semester of the 2020/2021 academic year still have to be online.

“For this reason, we hope that the lecturers can immediately design their course materials. If they need certain lecture materials, they will be assisted in the production process,” he said.

According to Erwan, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences UGM currently develops Learning Management System (LMS). It is an alternative learning platform that will coexist with ELOK.

“This is undoubtedly more integrated, and we are thinking about how students can access LMS for free. It is a digital transformation in the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences; thus, even though Covid has ended, we will still use it to be efficient, whether with offline and online comparisons of 50:50 or 70:30”, he added.

The Rector of UGM conveyed the same hope. He hopes that the pocketbook “Piawai Kuliah Daring” can be distributed to faculties at UGM to become a reference.

“Covid-19 indeed forces complete online courses. In 2019, we had issued a decree, which in essence is that 40 percent of the lecture are conducted online, but unfortunately only a few have taken advantage of it”, he said.

Panut admitted offline lectures were much better than online. Through face to face, the academic atmosphere is much livelier, and lecturers can share many experiences with students.

“However, whether the Covid-19 pandemic or not, the current advancement of Information Technology makes online lectures a kind of necessity,” he said.

Lisa Lindawati, M.A, a lecturer at the Department of Communication, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences UGM, one of the pocketbooks authors, stated that there are trends that lecturers do when conducting online lectures. This tendency includes forcing offline lecture content into online media.

“It means that the digital process runs practically and makes the results less optimal for the students,” said Lisa.

According to Lisa, the offline ecosystem is different from the online one. Thus, it requires a strategy to create a digital ecosystem.

“Therefore, in this book, we write several vital points that will be beneficial for lecturers, especially lecturers at Faculty of Social and Political Sciences,” she said.
