Special Region of Yogyakarta experienced growth of 5.26 percent and 6.02 percent in 2017 and 2018. The growth was supported by the construction services sector which grew 7.03 and 13.1 percent in 2017 and 2018. The construction of Yogyakarta International Airport is one of the drivers of the growth of this sector, in addition to the construction of schools, hotels, and housing (BPS, 2019a). The province’s economy was the largest contributor to the manufacturing industry, the hotel and restaurant services sector, and the construction services sector. Exports from DI Yogyakarta in 2018 increased by 8.7 percent. The main export commodities are apparel, not knitwear, furniture and home lighting, and knitted goods. The main export destination countries are the United States (37.39 percent), Germany (11.34 percent), and Japan (8.3 percent). Imports in 2018 decreased by 7.11 percent from 2017. The biggest import commodities were textile raw materials imported from China, Hong Kong and Taiwan (BPS, 2019c). The poverty rate of the DI Yogyakarta Province is higher than the national average. Even so, the percentage of poor people in DI Yogyakarta decreased from 13 percent in 2017 to 11.7 percent in March 2019. The largest population of poor people is in Bantul and Gunungkidul districts (BPS, 2019b).
