Monthly Seminar: Urban Transport Emergency in Indonesia – Paradigm Change in Urban Transport Development

Various transportation problems occur in Indonesia such as; congestion rate, accident fatality ratio, and economic losses arising from these conditions. Problems in the transportation sector arise when the city grows ignoring the capacity and carrying capacity and there is no clear physical delineation of the city. This area model has complexity in organizing urban public transportation and is the beginning of failure in city development. Urban transport systems have difficulty reaching all urban areas. Meanwhile, residential/residential areas are built close to access roads, the consequence is increasing dependency on the use of private vehicles.

Urban transport emergencies become increasingly relevant when handling urban transportation problems is only limited to symptoms and do not address the root of the problem. There needs to be a change in the paradigm of urban development to address the root of the problem, namely the change from a city that facilitates private vehicles to cities that prioritize mass transportation service systems. One change is the mainstreaming of transportation in urban development. Transportation must get immediate and serious attention so that transportation can truly become the mainstream and priority of urban development. This condition will encourage all parties to realize the magnitude of losses due to the failure of urban transportation development.
