Smart Car UGM MCS Team makes smart cars to process waste into fuel and low emissions. Their success made the UGM team qualify for the finals in the Shell Ideas 360 competition in London in July 2018.
Member of the UGM MCS Smart Car Team said the idea of making this car motivated to fight plastic waste. The amount of plastic waste that continues to grow is also a world comparison. He said, on average each person produced 2.5 kilograms of plastic waste (kg) every day. Around 90 percent of the plastic waste ends up in the trash. The rest again pollutes the environment.
The plastic waste can be converted into fuel. But it takes a lot of energy to be able to convert plastic waste into fuel. This UGM Chemical Engineering student revealed that vehicle exhaust gas heat can reach 500 degrees Celsius. With that much heat, it can be used for the process. Smart cars are described as having pyrolysis reactors. Its capacity consumes 2 kilograms of plastic waste. The car is also equipped with Microalgae Cultivation Support (MCS) technology which is used to reduce the amount of CO2 in the vehicle.
Smart Cars do not only produce fuel and biofuels. However, it also trashes in the environment and makes it a better environment. This car contributes to reducing the amount of carbon dioxide thereby reducing climate change.
